Fun at Half-Price Books

The girls have been participating in Half-Price Books Summer Reading Program.  They love bing able to pick out their own book each week.  Each time we go, they "read" about 20 books each before picking one to bring home.

Little Froggies

This summer, the girls have really been enjoying their new found freedom in the pool thanks to their new Puddle Jumpers lifejackets.  I had seen these in a magazine last summer, but not in any local stores.  Well this summer, they happen to be available at Target!

Daddy's Baby Car

Walt got a golf cart not too long ago, and the girls call it the "baby car" - meaning the small car.  They love riding around in it.

More please?

Elmer's Glue and Construction Paper

Elmer's glue, construction paper and a little imagination (oh and maybe a pair of scissors) are all you need to fill an afternoon around here.  I got to work cutting shapes and the girls glued to their hearts' content.

Kristin made a puppy.

Dirty Little Secrets

Oh potty training, the bane of my (current) existence.  Not having control over the situation is not a fun thing.  Trying to reason with a 2 year old who can't put her feelings into words is tough.  Not being able to tell me WHY they don't want to go in the potty.  So frustrating!
I have read and read about all different techniques, personal stories, articles, philosophies, etc, but my conclusion is this:  Everyone has their dirty little potty training secrets.  When first discussing, everything is glazed over into this perfect potty training story.  This is when I feel like everyone else knows exactly what to do and I am a complete failure at this little game.   Then the little things start to come out...well, they are totally potty trained...except for naps, night time, when we go out, etc.  That is when I remember that we are all human, we all want to look like we have it together.  Even when it is totally out of our control.  I wish we could all just fess up to the trials and tribulations of our potty training adventures.  As new moms, we put TONS of pressure on ourselves to do everything right, to be perfect, and by golly we our children better hit all those milestones on-time.  So if the kids aren't potty trained by xxx time, we fail.

So on that note - here is the start of our potty training:
We started about two weeks ago by telling the girls that soon we would be running out of diapers and when that happened, they would have to wear big girl panties.  Sidenote:  They already have panties (so we didn't go out and buy more this time around) because we tried the switch from diapers a few months ago, but had tons of accidents and HUGE fits about sitting on the potty.  So we stopped.  Each day they would check the diaper supply and say, "more diapers", but last Sunday night we hid all the extra diapers that we had except for 2 that would be used that night.  They are real big on knowing what is coming next, so I feel like this prep work was imperative for them.
Day 1 (Monday):  Because of the meltdowns regarding being told to sit on the potty last time around, I started out by stressing "dry" panties instead of focusing on the potty so much.  We set up a sticker chart with the following guidelines:  Dry panties - 1 sticker, peeing in the potty - 2 stickers, pooping in the potty - 3 stickers.  I set the kitchen timer for every 20 minutes and when the timer would go off, we would have a pantie check.  Kristin's panties dry?  Camryn's panties dry?  Mommy's panties dry?  Great!  1 sticker.  Kristin cried some when put on the potty, but Camryn was a big helper and would get Kristin a tissue to blow her nose.  They big moment of the day was Camryn peeing on the potty all by herself.  The first day!  Woohoo!  Kristin kept wanting me or Walt to sit with her on the floor when she was on the potty.  For nap time and bed time, we decided to go with "Dora panties" a.k.a. Easy Ups (Pampers version of Pull-ups).  The girls quickly figured out that they could pee in these and started holding it until it was time to sleep.
Day 2 (Tuesday):  Kristin continued rebelling against sitting on the potty, so I tried not to push her too much.  Camryn just held it most of the day.  Not much additional success today.
Day 3 (Wednesday):  They are either holding it until nap time, or peeing on the floor.  Not a real great day.  Contemplate giving up.  Frustrated that Camryn used the potty so easily the first day and now basically refuses to use the potty (and pees at nap time) or just pees on the floor.
Day 4 (Thursday):  Decided to keep them in panties during their nap so they couldn't just hold it until sleep time, then pee in their Dora panties.  Neither peed all morning, so I was convinced that they would pee as soon as they fell asleep.  Nope.  An hour and a half nap, no accidents.  Kristin finally peed at 4pm and Camryn peed at 5pm.
Day 5 (Friday):  3 major accidents before nap time.  I'm pretty done at this point.
Day 6 (Saturday):  Several weeks ago we had planned to go to Six Flags for my sister's birthday, so we opt for diapers during this outing.  It was really hot outside, so we were pushing fluids all day.  Camryn was dry all day (I think a combination of holding it/dehydration, I didn't have to pee either and I had been drinking all day too).  The break from potty training seemed to be a good thing for Cam, she peed in the potty once we got home!  Kristin still having fuss fests when sitting on the potty.  She has stamina though - she'll sit on the potty for over an hour without much problem.  She just wants someone to sit next to her.
Day 7 (Sunday): The morning is not great, Kristin has a big poop accident (Thanks Walt for cleaning that one!), but about halfway through the day Kristin gets it.  I mean she really gets it.  She goes to the potty by herself...constantly.  She is so excited to understand and be able to control things herself.  She sits on the potty, then claps for herself when she pees.  It is so cute!  Overall Camryn seems a little worse today - especially since Kristin is getting so much praise.  Camryn starts to poop in the bathtub, but Walt comes to the rescue with a mad dash to bring a small potty into the bathroom.  She managed to poop a tiny bit in the potty, so that was a plus at the end of the day.  I make sure to tell her several times that I know she can do it.  I also say that it is her choice - she can choose to pee in the potty or pee on the floor.  It is her choice.  At bedtime I overhear Camryn telling Kristin, "Choice! Pee pee in potty, pee pee on floor.  Choice"  So she is listening and it is sinking in.  I just don't want her to be scarred by this whole process.
Day 8 (Monday):  Kristin totally has peeing down, but Camryn is not real happy about being forced to do something (like pee on command) so she just holds it. I decided to give her a "pull-up break", for both our sanity. She seems really stressed about it all.  Told Cam that tomorrow she would be back in panties, but she was getting a break today.  So Kristin proceeded to pee about 49 times all by herself (on the little potty and with help being lifted onto the big potty).  No reminders for Kristin.  Both dry for nap time too.

Now on with the adventure!

Scarborough Renaissance Festival

About a month ago, my mom, my sister, her boyfriend, me and the girls headed to Scarborough for some of the best people watching times of the year.  This is a renaissance festival - so most people dress-up in period inspired clothes (think lots of bosom, big dresses, and swords), but I'm just not sure if being dressed as Santa Clause counts as "historically based".   The girls loved seeing all the animals - horses in the jousting, camel and elephant rides, llamas, and even a cebu!  A real life cebu.  I thought they only existed in song

Kristin is in blue-green and Camryn is in pink-orange.

Festival Fun

This year marks the first time the girls have ridden any carnival ride besides the carousel. Camryn is always ready for something new...Kristin not so much. Kristin ends up enjoying herself about 5 seconds after the ride starts. She would much rather watch Camryn ride it once (to make sure it is safe), then ride the next time.

The first ride of the day (left to right - Kristin, Camryn and C)

Kristin insisted on not wearing clips - she just pushed her hair behind her ears...you can see how well that worked.

Driving the truck...the were turning the steering wheels like crazy

They insisted on riding the helicopter - they had second thoughts

Once it started moving they were okay

And then they realized if you pull the bar back then the helicopter "flies" higher. They stayed this high the whole time.
